DR. JOHANNES HEIDENHAIN GmbH develops and manufactures linear and angle encoders, rotary encoders, digital readouts and numerical controls for demanding positioning tasks. HEIDENHAIN products are used primarily in high-precision machine tools as well as in plants for the production and processing of electronic components. With our extensive experience and know-how in the development and manufacture of measuring devices and numerical controls, we create the groundwork for the automation of tomorrow’s plants and production machines. Competence in the area of linear and angular metrology is reflected by a large number of customized solutions for users. These include the measuring and test equipment developed and built for many of the world’s standards laboratories and the angle encoders for various telescopes and satellite receiving antennas. Naturally the standard products also profit from these experiences. The high quality of HEIDENHAIN products depends on special production facilities and measuring equipment. Masters and submasters for scale manufacturing are produced in a clean-room building, conceived especially for this purpose, with special measures for temperature stabilization and vibration insulation. The the machines required for the manufacture and measurement of linear and circular graduations and copying machines are also developed and built by HEIDENHAIN.

Exposed linear encoders are designed for use on machines and installations that require high accuracy of the measured value. Encoders used for applications in a high or ultrahigh vacuum need to fulfill special requirements. Design and materials used have to be specially adapted for it. Angle encoder modules from HEIDENHAIN are combinations of angle encoders and high-precision bearings that are optimally adjusted to each other. They are characterized by their high degree of measuring and bearing accuracy, their very high resolution, as well as optimum repeatability. The low starting torque permits smooth motions. SRP angle encoder modules are additionally equipped with an integrated torque motor. They therefore combine a motor, precision bearing and encoder with very high accuracy in one compact system. The torque motor with its very low detent torque enables extraordinarily smooth motion control. Neither disruptive detent torques nor radial forces impair the high guideway accuracy of the bearing. Thanks to their design as completely specifi ed and tested composite assemblies, handling and installation is very simple.
