Fluspirilene (Redeptin, Imap, R6218) is a typical antipsychotic drug used for the treatment of schizophrenia and other mental disorders. The amount of fluspirilene needed to control symptoms should not exceed the recommended by the manufacturers. The recommended starting dose of between 4 and 10 mg depending upon the severity of the symptoms, and this dose may be further titrated by increasing the dose by 2 mg every week until therapeutic response is obtained. Another interesting though less distressing side effect of fluspirilene is the marked weight gain, although the weight gain do not parallel improvements of mental state. The use of fluspirilene in the management of non-hospitalized patients offers certain obvious advantages.
