VIPs work by maintaining an inside vacuum that won't transfer heat or cold from one side of the panel to the other. Aluminimum can extend the service life of the vacuum, but has its own high thermal conducitivity. Heat or cold can transfer through the aluminium, especially along the sealed edges. This is known as "thermal edge effect" or "heat bridging". EVALâ„¢ VM-XL provides the barrier properties necessary to maintain the internal vacuum. But since it is a plastic film with only an extremely thin metallized layer, thermal conductivity is reduced to a minimum. The insulation efficiency of EVALâ„¢ and aluminium VIPs may be similar when measured in the centre of the panel. However, EVALâ„¢ VIPs show significantly less heat bridging when measured along the edges of the panel.
