Sodium persulfate is a salt of peroxodisulphuric acid and is a strong oxidizing agent and an excellent free radical in the polymerization. Because of the high potential of oxidation Sodium persulfate can effect igniting in certain circumstances. Sodium persulfate is characterized by high solubility, the solutions are acidic and have a limited stability period. Application The most important application is in the aqueous polymerization of organic monomers. Here, the fast-dissolving sodium acts by controlled decomposition as radical. This degradation can be substantially increased by additions to already at low temperatures and low sodium levels (0.1 - 0.5% based on the monomer) to achieve high polymerization rates. In such systems, the monomers are usually sufficiently soluble in water and are deposited during the polymerization. Otherwise, the polymerization in an aqueous emulsion of the monomer is carried out, for example styrene-butadiene and acrylonitrile. Another important use
