The curing mechanism between Vicura MC68 (Pyromellitic Acid Diphenyl Imidazoline Salt) and the epoxy resin is complex. Two parallel processes are taking place; direct reaction between the imidazoline and the epoxy group and homopolymerization of the epoxy resin that is catalyzed by Vicura MC68. Compared to most of the powder coating systems where the optimal ratio between the crosslinker and the binder is close to the stoichiometric one, in the case of Vicura MC68 the optimal ratio is generally determined empirically. For epoxy resins that are typically used for powder coatings (epoxy equivalent weights between 700 – 1000) amounts of 8,0 – 10,0 % of Vicura MC68 are recommended as good starting points. Vicura MC31 (2phenyl2imidazoline) is an offwhite powder which has C9H10N2 as chemical formula. A micronized grade of dicyandiamide containing 1.5%1.6% antiblocking agent to inhibit clumping and improve handling. It is used as curing agent for epoxy resins. Due to its high melting point Vicura DICY 100S does not melt during extrusion to produce a homogeneous mixture with the epoxy resin on a molecular scale. Therefore Vicura DICY 100S is supplied with low particle size assuring in this way acceptable homogeneity during the extrusion step, provided the premixing process is done properly.
