The high quality diatomite in the lower beds in dazzling white in colour and is composed mainly of silica and very few impurities in minor quantities. This bed measures about 10 Meters in thickness and has diatomite with density of approximately 180km/m3.The Gicheru Diatomite Deposit: The diatomite deposits found in Gicheru area has been mined in small scale using the artisanal and mechanized methods from time to time and was evaluated in detail by binge in 1957-1959 and later Saggerson 1991, both of the departments of mines and geology at their times of research.This deposit appear to have been formed in a wedge shaped hallow formed by the block rift faulting along the eastern rift valley escarpment.The diatomite appears in beds, which are thickest on the western side and thin rapidly against the shelving slope of volcanic aggregates forming the wall of the Rift escarpment to the east.There can be distinguished three grades of the diatomite in this deposit with the grades improving dow
