Tungsten has a high density, which makes it convenient for ionizing radiation shielding. Despite the higher density compared to traditional and cheaper lead, tungsten shielding is less heavy with equal shielding properties, and more effective if the weight is the same. Tungsten is a very refractory and hard metal, which makes it difficult to process. Therefore, more ductile tungsten alloys with nickel, iron, copper, etc. are used.
