Some species, primarily meadow timothy (Phleum pratense), are of great economic importance as important fodder plants that go to feed any agricultural livestock. Cultivated in pastures and, like sown grasses, in fields for making hay.

Alfalfa is used in agriculture as livestock feed; it is harvested for hay and hay flour is made from it. Alfalfa is used for medicinal purposes. It is used for diseases of the intestines, stomach, thyroid gland, to improve metabolism, increase lactation, normalize the state of the circulatory system, lower cholesterol levels, lower blood sugar, and increase hemoglobin levels in the blood. Some species are used as decorative and medicinal (Medicago sativa, Medicago falcata) plants. Phytoconcentrates of alfalfa are used in skin care products.
