Knight Optical offer a range of Stock Sapphire Windows, for use within Infrared Systems. Knight Optical can offer Sapphire (Al2O3) Optics for Infra-red systems over the waveband of 0.2 to 5µm. We offer Sapphire optics for UV, Visible, NIR (0.9 to 1.5µm) and Mid-Waveband Infra-Red (MWIR, 3 to 5µm) Imaging Systems. Sapphire has hardness of about HK2000, which makes it a better choice for windows and outer elements of lens systems. Sapphire has good transmission in the MWIR band, and can be used with optical glass in the NIR, and with Silicon or Germanium in the MWIR, to form well corrected doublets and lens systems. These systems include, for example, Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) systems, and thermography. Al2 O3 has a refractive index of about 1.9288no 1.9174ne at 200nm through to 1.623no 1.615ne in the IR (5µm). This pairing will allow for the design and manufacture of a colour corrected lens that can be used in broad spectrum thermal imaging systems.

A broad variety of gas transmission cells are : Gas Cells analysis of gas & vapour phase components in IR optical spectroscopy. These range from short path length gas cells for percent level concentration measurement, to long path length gas cells for part-per-billion concentrations. Options include fixed and variable path length gas cells, as well as ambient temperature and heated gas cells. The windows that can be used with the gas cell include NaCl, KBr, CaF2, BaF2, or ZnSe infrared transmission windows, which are mounted in an optical spectrometer. Infra-red interference Shortpass filters are designed to transmit wavelengths shorter than the “cut-off” of the filter and to block bands above that. In many systems that require heat shielding while still needing visibility a shortpass filter can be used. These can attenuate infrared radiation and allow through visible light, which allows your temperature sensitive equipment to be visible. Since the 1960s, scientists have used LIDAR (light detection and ranging) to study the atmosphere. Short pulses of laser light are used to detect particles or gases in the atmosphere, like a radar bounces radio waves off rain drops in clouds. A telescope collects and measures reflected laser radiation, like a radar dish collects the radar signal, leading to a profile of the atmosphere's structure along the path of the laser beam. Combustible Gas Detection - upgrade to upper class! Monitoring the environment for explosive gases most of the time you would be looking for hydrocarbons. It is a characteristic of hydrocarbons that they have a number of C - H bonds. These bonds absorb infrared light at a wavelength of 3,4 mm ( unsaturated hydrocarbons absorb at 3,3 mm ). This effect can be used to reliably detect these substances The most important advantage is that they are resistant against catalyst poisons and high concentrations. They can even be used in oxygen free atmosphere. Another important advantage of this technology is that a failure cannot go unnoticed. If an important component such as the lamp or the detector fails, the system will recognise this as 100 % absorption (an alarm situation). Most infrared gas detectors are designed as so - called NDIR (Non Dispersive Infra Red) double- beam detectors. This means, the light beam is divided in two portions with different wavelengthes. One is the measuring beam that will be absorbed by gas, the other is a reference beam at a wavelength that will not be absorbed by gas. This beam compensates for intensity variations of the lamp, dirt and corrosion. As the optics are mostly self maintained, an eventual inspection only checks if there is gas access to the sensor. Therefore much longer maintenance intervals compared to the catalytic sensor can be justified. As a rule of thumb, twice as long is OK. For plants which already have installed a combustible gas detection system, there is now a chance for a very cost- effective upgrade: The Statox 501 LC IR or LC MR! It consists of an EEx e (enhanced safety) terminal box and a sensor with integrated electronics. This sensor operates at the same supply voltage as a catalytic sensor. Its output signal is also identical to the signal of a catalytic sensor! This new innovative technical approach keeps the price in the same ballpark as catalytic sensors! All advantages of an infrared gas detector are now available for nearly the same price as a catalytic sensor and existing gas detection systems can now be upgraded without replacing the existing hardware. Of course the miniaturised chip inside the sensor cannot provide the same powerful electronics and software package as a high- end instrument, but however the new Compur Statox 501 IR LC features the most important advantages of an infrared system.
