This course deals with the legal & management aspects of water safety and is accredited with CPD & recognised by ILM, part of the City & Guilds Group. The term ‘water safety’ is a broad capture for risks associated from Legionnaires’ disease / Scalding / Pseudomonas aeruginosa [Pa]. The approach to managing these risks will depend on the type of organisation and the types of water risk systems and susceptibility of those who are exposed. Topics covered on the course will include: - Background to Legionella / Scalding / Pseudomonas aeruginosa - Susceptibilities - Proven & frequent sources of Legionnaires’ disease & Pseudomonas aeruginosa - Ecology of waterborne pathogens - Control strategies for managing water safety risk - Understanding law, regulations & guidance - Best Practice - Prosecutions examples and lessons learnt - Development of a Water Safety Plan - Challenges facing organisations

Accredited with CPD & recognised by ILM, part of the City & Guilds Group. The Authorised Person (AP) has operational responsibility for the water service. They will be qualified, sufficiently experienced & skilled to fully operate the service, including its maintenance. This role involves maintenance of records, quality of service and system safety (integrity) and overseeing routine testing of the water, storage & distribution system. Topics covered on the course include: - The requirements for growth of Legionella, interactions of Legionella with other microbiota - Factors affecting the accumulation of biofilm - Effectiveness of biocides against Legionella, protozoa & biofilm - When to use biocides, selection of biocides - Effectiveness of temperature as a Legionella control method - Cold & hot water storage design & upgrading, distribution system issues - Showers, disposable & re‐usable shower head filters. - Monitoring, Legionella Sampling

This course is aimed at members of the WSG who have a responsibility for managing projects / refurbishment from the concept & design stage through to completion - be it a new build through to a refurbishment & alterations to existing water systems. This course would benefit those external organisations who are involved with the design & delivery of developments for their clients (i.e construction and architects). The course is accredited with CPD & recognised by ILM, part of the City & Guilds Group. Topics covered on the course will include: - Background to Legionella / Pseudomonas aeruginosa / Scalding; - Favorable conditions; - Susceptible individuals; - Control strategies for managing water safety risk; - Understanding law, regulations and guidance - Water Safety Groups; - Role & Responsibilities of the AP - Design; - Water Safety Plans - the design control element of a WSP; - Lessons learnt;

This course is ideal for those who are not directly involved with the operation and maintenance of water systems, but still require an understanding of Legionella and the risk posed by this bacteria and what can be done to minimise the risk. This awareness course maybe applicable to those persons who provide hotel services, caretakers / janitors and / or building / departmental staff. Topics covered on the course include: -Legionella the bacteria - the history and current cases reported -Factors that encourage Legionella growth within water systems -An overview of the law, regulations and guidance applicable to Legionella -Those persons involved in the routine management and operation of water systems -Control strategies that can assist with minimising growth of Legionella in water systems -Operational checks that can assist with evidencing control strategies are working - Identification and management of little used outlets. Identifying a company to carry out a water risk assessment should be relatively straightforward but how can you be sure that the service offered is fit for purpose & will help to discharge your legal obligations? The answer, increasingly, is accreditation. Our UKAS LRA's are accredited to ISO/IEC 17020:2012 & are compliant with the ACoP L8 & BS 8580. With this knowledge you can be confident that we have the technical expertise and management systems in place to undertake each legionnaires' risk assessment competently, professionally and impartially.

Combining specialist knowledge of engineering, building services & health & safety, to guide you in meeting your water hygiene compliance objectives. In the Autumn of 2015 guidance was issued for the role of Authorising Engineer [Water]. Guidance recommends that any Authorising Engineer [Water] should remain independent of the operational structure of an organisation. The Water Hygiene Centre can provide an AE [Water], who will act as your independent professional Legionella consultant, giving support & advice in accordance with relevant guidance. Your appointed AE [Water] will: - Provide an annual water safety audit - Attend your Water Safety Group, supporting & improving your on-going management of water hygiene risks - Undertake a review and update of your Written Scheme / Water Safety Plan - Routinely monitor your organisational performance - Assess & appraise members of your management team & make recommendations for their formal appointment - Provide training

The audit process draws on the management requirements of the HSE's ACoP (L8) and HTM 04-01 & HTM 03-01 (where appropriate). If you are prosecuted for breach of health & safety law, and it is proved that you did not follow the relevant provisions of the Code, you will need to show that you have complied with the law in some other way or a Court will find you at fault.” A water safety audit is crucial to the development or refinement of any good risk management system & the control of Legionella. Our water hygiene audit will examine and verify the management systems you currently have in place & cover issues including: - Appointment of Responsible Persons' & associated staff - Roles, responsibilities & lines of communication - Risk assessment & re-assessment of compliance - Review of policy & procedures document(s) including records - Implementation of remedial works - Evidence of monitoring & performance of systems - Staff training

Water Safety Plan [WSP], defined in BS8680 as… ‘strategic plan which defines & documents the arrangements that are required for the safe use & management of all water systems together with all associated systems & equipment within each building or estate to prevent harm arising from all forms of exposure’. Depending on the type & size of your organisation the scope & content of the WSP will vary. The initial steps in the development of a WSP is understanding the water related risks, the need to have identified and assessed those water related risks within a building or across an entire estate. This baseline of the water risks allows the development of the associated processes to be defined, outlining applicable arrangements to ensure the safe use of, and management of the water systems and associated equipment initially identified.
