Success at the first insemination is key to optimal reproductive performance in dairy cows. The fertility of lactating dairy cows has reportedly decreased over the last decades. In pasture-based systems, such as in Ireland and New Zealand, conception rates to the first insemination vary between 39 and 52%, while the rates in feedlot systems are as low as 30 to 40% [1]. A failed insemination may lead to an increase in calving interval, insemination numbers, reproductive treatment, feeding, culling, and replacement heifers. All of these lead to additional costs that can sum up to an average of 290 euros [2].

Milk fever is a complex metabolic disease in cows that usually occurs around calving and most commonly in high-yielding dairy cows from three years and older. The average cost, including medicines, veterinary services, and estimated production loss, amounts up to 334 USD per case (or 0,01 Bitcoin at the time of writing, but that has probably already changed by now). Calcitop bolus is an easy solution to prevent all this from happening. And to give the cows and farmer an even better protection we have created an improved formula.

When rearing calves, farmers strive for regular growth of their animals. This can only be achieved when the calves get enough food and when farmers ensure that the animals remain healthy. A common, yet underexposed, problem to the calves’ health is coccidiosis (also named eimeriosis). A 2011 study in Austria showed that only 45% of the farmers were familiar with the term “coccidia”. So, what is this? What is coccidiosis in calves? Coccidiosis is an important parasitic disease of vertebrate animals (including calves and adult cattle) and is a common cause of scours. The infection is mainly seen in calves from 3 weeks up to approximately 1 year of age and is highly prevalent on cattle farms. This high prevalence causes a big financial impact to farms due to reduced growth or even death of calves.

Our mastitis bolus Mammitop Small is a slow-release sheep supplement that is developed to prevent the development of clinical mastitis after lambing or in situations with increasing cell count. It has a slow release of 21 days. A trial was conducted at the University of Leon in Spain. 52 sheep received a Mammitop Small bolus and 53 sheep were in the control group. The trial looked at the evolution of milk production, cheese production, somatic cell count, and urea in milk.

Calcium supplementation is crucial for cows around calving as hypocalcemia (milk fever) can have many secondary diseases as a consequence. Given that 5% of dairy cows in large and high-producing dairy farms get clinical milk fever, and 50% subclinical milk fever it goes without saying that the economic losses are substantial. In an earlier blog I wrote on our website, you could read about the symptoms, treatment, and prevention of milk fever. Calcitop is of course a supplement to prevent milk fever from happening. You can read more about this bolus on the product page. However, according to a Hungarian study, Calcitop also prevents many secondary diseases.

First of all, what is Tracetop Junior? Well, it is a bolus with minerals and vitamins for calves of about 6 months of age. During the next 6 months, this bolus will slowly release its vitamins and minerals, ensuring a healthy calf with an improved weight gain. After these 6 months, the farmer can give High Trace or Tracetop. The trial consisted of measuring the most important parameter for meat farmers, which is the daily weight gain. We want to thank our distributor in Chile, Mario Fernández from Fedagro, for performing the trial. Trial design The trial was performed on a group of calves for meat production. Weight gain was compared between animals treated with Resco's Tracetop Junior bolus and a control group treated with commercial salts. The test was conducted at the Fundo La Encierra owned by Mr. José Tomás Pérez Cruz in the municipality of Paillaco, Chile. The breed of calves is predominantly American bought from dairy farms in the Rios region.

Dairy cow's milk production is determined to a large extent by the healthiness of the udders. Therefore, dairy farmers must pay the necessary attention to keeping "the production facilities" healthy to prevent subclinical or clinical mastitis. It is generally accepted that subclinical mastitis occurs when the somatic cell count is over 200.000, even without symptoms [1]. The damage caused by mastitis is not small. The average cost of clinical mastitis varies between studies. In the USA the average cost of a case of clinical mastitis in the first 30 days in lactation is a whopping 444 euros [2]. In The Netherlands, the economic losses of a clinical case were calculated as 210 euros [3]. A Swedish study looked at both clinical and subclinical mastitis. The cost of clinical mastitis was 275 euros per case, while the cost of subclinical mastitis averaged on 60 euros per case [4]. Although the cost of a case of subclinical mastitis is lower, we should not forget that subclinical mastitis
