SCHOCK has been a successful innovator and manufacturer of ball bearing telescopic rails and linear slide systems for decades. Our products impress with their precision, high load ratings and long service life.

A fuel injection systems manufacturer used two steel brackets to clamp the fuel rail to the top of the engine. The customer was looking at changing these brackets to plastic to reduce costs. In order to prevent deformation of the plastic bracket during the tightening of the bolt, a Compression Limiter was required. The customer originally investigated the use of a machined Compression Limiter, but the savings from changing the metal bracket to plastic would have been lost considering the high price of the machined Limiter. The customer approached SPIROL to help provide a lower cost solution for the Compression Limiter. SPIROL recommended the use of a standard CL200 Compression Limiter based on the rated proof load of the bolt used in the assembly. This roll-formed Compression Limiter is a fraction of the cost of a machined Compression Limiter. In addition, the flexibility of the roll formed Limiter enabled the customer to widen their hole tolerances further reducing assembly costs.

This robust, vertical installation machine is specifically designed to install Compression Limiters into a variety of plastic components. The machine is available in two models: the CL1000 is capable of 4.4 kN (or 1,000 lbs.) of installation force and the CL2000 is capable of 8.8 kN (or 2,000 lbs. of installation force, and is available with multiple installation tips in nearly any configuration at various elevations. The incorporation of a touchscreen operator interface machines makes our machines easy to use and customisable. Language conversion is easily executed to support international use. The Model CL is equipped with installation verification to ensure that the machine has completed a full installation cycle and a Compression Limiter was installed at each location. The machines can install a single Compression Limiter or multiple Compression Limiters simultaneously into various polymers, thermoplastics and thermosets. All designs incorporate standardized machine components to reduce factory lead time, improve component reliability, and lower component costs. Some of SPIROL's standard Pin Installation Models can be equipped with a pusher punch (in place of a pin insertion quill) to press Threaded Inserts into plastic assemblies. The most appropriate Installation Machine depends on the actual insertion force required to press the Insert into the plastic hole and the desired productivity. Generally speaking, the Model PMH Heavy Duty Installation Machine is typically used for low to medium volume installation, and for medium to high volume installation, SPIROL's Model PH/PHX Platen-Style Installation Machines can be used for simultaneous installation of several Press-In Inserts at the same or different elevations. Due to the length to diameter ratio of Press -In Inserts, it is not possible to cost-effectively tube feed this type of Threaded Insert with SPIROL's automatic feeding and Installation machines.

The SPIROL Model PH Heat Insert Driver provides an accurate and consistent method to simultaneously install multiple Threaded Inserts or Compression Limiters at multiple elevations. Simultaneous installation dramatically increases productivity and simplifies the number of manufacturing steps to complete an assembly. Additionally, the platen head and fixture can be easily changed to accommodate quick change-over to different assemblies associated with new production runs. This machine can be used to install 12 Inserts into 1 assembly, or a fewer number of Inserts into a larger number of assemblies – as long as the total combination does not exceed 12 Inserts.

With this exceptionally versatile machine, the operator does not need to physically touch the Insert during the entire installation process. SPIROL’s Model HA Automatic Heat Insert Driver has been designed to eliminate the dependency on the operator to control the factors of time, temperature and pressure to ensure nearly perfect flow of the plastic for optimal retention and performance. SPIROL's Model DP self-contained vertical drilling and pinning machine is ideally suited for moderate to high production applications that require accurate drilling and pinning of assemblies. The concept of drilling and pinning with one system eliminates tight tolerance and precision drilling of individual components to ensure proper alignment of holes for assembly. The Model DP Drilling and Pinning Machine consists of an automatic high-precision drilling unit, a SPIROL Model CR Heavy Duty Pin Insertion Machine and a precision air-powered linear slide unit to move the assembly between the drill unit and installation station. The Model DP Drilling and Pinning Machine can drill holes ranging in diameter from 0.8mm-6mm (.031”-.250”) and is capable of insertion forces up to 8 kN (1,800 lbs).

SPIROL's Model HC Dual Pin Inserter is a lightweight, portable, horizontal Pin Inserter designed to install SPIROL Series 550 Cosmetic Coiled Pins into plastic hinges. The cylinder/driving head modules can be moved in and out with ease, and fixture changes are simple which enables quick conversion from one assembly to another. This machine quickly and effectively delivers the pins automatically to the installation site eliminating the need for the operator to touch them during the entire assembly operation. This machine dramatically increases production efficiency with minimal operator training and effort.

SPIROL's Model CR Semi-Automatic Heavy Duty Pin Inserter is a robust, vertical pin insertion machine ideally suited for moderate to high production for applications requiring up to 8kN (1,800 lbs) of installation force. A retractable pin orientation head, mounted on a shaft/linear bearing arrangement moves up and down for ease of loading and unloading of the components to be assembled. The insertion bushing is positioned close to the part for smooth, trouble free installation. The orientation head shuttles the pin from the feeding position to the installation position, and also functions as a selector, preventing longer or shorter pins from being installed. A two position trap door allows for easy clear-out of the feed tube.
