VARIOcouple® The VARIOcouple® apparatus for torque and force measurement manufactured by CLA is a very precise instrument mainly used in development laboratories of watchmakers. This instrument allows quantifying and analyzing small torques and forces generated in low stress systems. The Digimes Universel is a 5 KHz carrier current bridge for resistive, inductive or differential transformer transducers connected in full or half bridge. The sensitivity is adjustable by the user between 2 mV/V and 100 mV/V according to six measuring ranges. Gain and offset can be adjusted with potentiometers to allow calibration of the sensor. There is also the Digimes Compact, dedicated to one sensor.

The CLA TSF-000 through TSF-5 are bidirectional, inductive type torque sensors. The measurement system is composed of an axis mounted on flexible pivots with cruciform springs allowing frictionless torque measurement. The axis rotation angle measurement, which is proportional to the measured torque, is performed via an inductive displacement sensor with carrier frequency. The small rotation angle, approximately 1° for all measurement range, allows very good linearity and negligible hysteresis.

The CLA LC-01 and LC-1 are bidirectional, inductive type force sensors. The measurement system is composed of a displacement transducer which mobile core is linked to two leaf copper beryllium springs. The spring flexion measurement, which is proportional to the force to be measured, is performed by inductive sensor with carrier frequency. The measurement shaft is interchangeable, allowing the use of special shaft.

The CLA SC-002 is bidirectional, resistive type force sensor. The measurement system is composed of a semiconductor strain gage. The measurement shaft is made of a 0.5mm diameter axis with a positioning notch for calibration and measurement. The design of that sensor is specially made for a high resonance frequency.

In order to measure torque and force, a large range of sensors is available. All these sensors are bidirectional, inductive or resistive type with a good linearity and negligible hysteresis. These sensors allow to measure torque less than 1 uNm and up to 1 Nm.

The EBATmètre® is a device for measuring height clearances. It is principally used to measure the moving parts of a mechanical watch movement.

The BARImeter® is a precision metrology device that offers a great flexibility in the measurement of microtechnical, horological and medical parts. The measuring wire ist fastened to the headstock or a special holding device, fed at the end of the base over a pulley and stretched tight with a weight (layout according to DIN 8606). The alignment tester must be placed on the carriage of the machine or a corresponding device, which can be moved in a longitudinal direction in predefined steps on the machine base. The measuring wire must be aligned in such a way that the same values are measured in the starting and end position of the carriage, i.e. that it is tensioned to form an imaginary connecting line parallel to these positions. When the wire is aligned to the bearing, the value display is set to zero. The straightness deviation can now be read directly on the display for each position when both parts of the image are fitted together by moving the microscope horizontally with the integrated micrometer spindle.

Laser Scanner Solution: This task is a typical application of the high-resolution QuellTech 2D/3D Q5-880 Blue Laser Scanners. Two of these units are placed at the left and at the right of the measuring objects, at a defined inclination angle. Blue laser light in this case is a prerequisite, as the cast parts are red-hot, hence emitting in the red spectral range. Additionally, the client was in need of a software solution for the project, so a 3D point cloud processing application was implemented, performing inline and evaluating width, height and angle results. QuellTech customer is able to inspect continuously the product quality, simultaneously avoiding scrap. He uses the same system for more than 10 different types of castings. Errors caused by manual inspection are considerably reduced, and safety for personnel is enhanced.

The QuellTech laser sensor family Q4 or Q5 used for these tasks is generally mounted on an arm of a rotational axis, to scan along the complete 360° angle of the internal surface in a sequence of strips. The Q4 sensors can also be used to control the weld seam tracking itself for rapid setup and ease of use. Even during a project, the range and scope of the Q Series sensor demonstrates the advantages of a modular system to quickly adapt to project needs, where the smallest system has provided fast analysis of pipes as small as 105mm. The low power, with standard communication protocols, enable battery powered systems to transmit wireless data to other systems for review and cloud back up.

Many materials cannot be measured tactilely, therefore non-contact thickness measurements become necessary. Especially e.g. with glowing materials, or wet processes, a continuous tactile measurement is nearly impossible. Furthermore, web speeds in plant engineering and production have increased, requiring a corresponding fast sampling rate of the measuring systems. Particular Challenges of the Application: By tactile equipment, determination of the deepest point on a rough metal surface is neither simple or precise. As a consequence, often either too much material is removed, or the surface is still covered with defects which have to be eliminated by a following milling cycle. The equipment is arranged in parallel, so that the complete width of the slabs is covered. The sensors are calibrated to a common coordinate system and mounted on a movable gantry. Before measurement, the slabs are fixed in place. The scanners mounted on the gantry are guided over the measuring object, driven by an electric motor. The point cloud recorded by the four scanners is consolidated in a PC by means of the QuellTech image processing software which calculates the difference between highest and lowest point of the corresponding surface and compensates for possible inclination of the slab (detrending).

Particular Challenge: For the assessment of rotating parts, numerous parameters have to be taken into consideration: Concentricity, radial run-out and axial run-out (i.e. wobble); furthermore thickness, diameter, planarity and the absence of surface defects had to be examined. The solution developed by QuellTech consists in a configuration of three Q6 Laser Laser Scanners.Each of the lateral surfaces is assigned to its own scanner. In order to enable the thickness precisely to be determined, both laser lines are mutually oriented in opposite direction. The third scanner inspects the outer circumference of the wheel, this way measuring diameter and radial run-out. All of these scanners are subject to encoder signals supplied by the rotary axis and synchronously triggered, so possible defects on the wheel can precisely be localized. The measurement takes place at a resolution of ca. 30 µm, and a cloud comprising several millions of points are obtained.
