Later, when Europeans brought wheat flour with them to the Americas and began to grow wheat, it was from this time that wheat tortillas were born. Wheat tortillas also contain other ingredients such as salt and any type of fat such as oil or lard. They may also contain a leavening agent, such as baking powder. Tortillas are the staple of the Mexican diet and are used to scoop or wrap grilled or baked meat. They can contain cheese, meat, sauce, and vegetables. They are the most popular food not only in Mexico but also in many places in Central America.
