Factors affecting the fatigue strength of bolts It is believed that metal fatigue, to some extent, is due to changes in the metallurgical properties of the material. As the crack length increases, the remaining material is subjected to more and more stress as the area to sustain the load becomes smaller and smaller. When the crack reaches a critical length, it goes through the material, leading to complete failure. A fatigued crash takes several years to pass through the bolt, "fatigue failure", is often used to describe damage to a part due to continuous loading.
